How SAHCO is Enhancing Interest in Science Education

In an era where Nigeria’s aspiration for technological advancement increasingly depends on the strength of its science education, the country’s leading ground handling firm, the Skyway Aviation Handling Company has taken the initiative to encourage and enhance students’ interest in the sciences many whose passions are hindered mostly by lack of equipment and tools in schools’ laboratories.
The company took a bold and practical step to bridge the gap between theory and real-world application with its recent intervention at Mafoluku Grammar School, Oshodi, is not just a corporate social responsibility (CSR) gesture—but a deliberate investment in the future of science education in Nigeria.
At the heart of the initiative is the donation and equipping of modern laboratories across key science disciplines, including chemistry, physics, biology, home economics, and agricultural Science. These facilities are designed to transform the learning experience for students, shifting from passive classroom instruction to active experimentation and discovery.

Speaking at the commissioning, Chairman of SAHCO Plc and SIFAX Group, Dr. Taiwo Afolabi underscored the strategic importance of such interventions as he noted that education remains one of the most powerful tools for national transformation, but stressed that true learning goes beyond textbooks.
According to him, practical environments like well-equipped laboratories are essential for nurturing curiosity, innovation, and problem-solving skills among young learners.
The business magnate message was clear: Nigeria’s ambition to become a technological and industrial powerhouse is closely tied to how much attention is given to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education—particularly at the secondary school level. By investing in these laboratories, SAHCO is contributing to a broader national goal of building a pipeline of future scientists, engineers, and innovators.

The Managing Director of SAHCO, Mrs. Adenike Aboderin, further emphasized this commitment, noting that education is a core pillar of the company’s CSR strategy.
She explained that the choice of Mafoluku Grammar School reflects SAHCO’s desire to impact communities within its operational environment, ensuring that students have access to conducive learning spaces and practical tools.
Her remarks also highlight the critical truth that no nation can achieve sustainable growth without prioritizing science education, noting that by providing students with hands-on laboratory experience, SAHCO is not only enhancing academic performance but also inspiring a new generation to take an interest in scientific careers.

For her “Education is the bedrock of any society and we thought that we should start with Mafoluku which is within the environment where we operate as a company and see that the student has a conducive learning environment and have practical experience of laboratories equipment because any country that doesn’t take sciences seriously cannot grow or develop.”
She affirmed that “It is transformational, innovative and inspirational and we are very happy to partner with the school and the state education authority. We just started and we plan to do more with them as we intend to roll out different programmes in the education space.”
The company’s vision was further reinforced by the Executive Director, Business Development at SAHCO, Babatunde Afolabi, who described the initiative as a reflection of SAHCO’s belief in the transformative power of education.
Babatunde highlighted that effective science education requires more than theoretical knowledge, saying that it demands access to tools, hands-on experiences, and environments that inspire inquiry.

In his word “Each of the newly equipped laboratories serves a distinct purpose. The Chemistry lab allows students to explore the building blocks of matter through experiments. The Physics lab opens their minds to the laws governing the universe. The Home Economics lab equips them with essential life and entrepreneurial skills, while the Agricultural Science lab introduces modern techniques critical for food security and economic sustainability. Together, these facilities create a holistic and engaging learning ecosystem.”
Beyond infrastructure, the initiative sends a powerful message to students—that their dreams are valid and worth investing in. It challenges them to think boldly, experiment fearlessly, and embrace failure as part of the learning process. As Afolabi aptly put it, the future belongs to those curious enough to pursue it.

From a broader perspective, this intervention reflects a growing recognition of the role corporate organisations must play in nation-building. SAHCO’s approach goes beyond philanthropy; it is a strategic alignment of business values with societal needs. By investing in education within its host community, the company is contributing to a more skilled workforce, a stronger economy, and a more innovative society.
The impact of this initiative is already being felt. The school leadership, represented by the Principal, Mrs. Obidake Kehinde and the Head Boy Olawale Olamide both expressed appreciations, noting that the equipment will significantly support students preparing for the upcoming West African Senior School Certificate Examinations.
A look at the faces of students’ present at the ceremony affirmed that for them, the newly equipped laboratories represent new vigor and opportunities—spaces where their hitherto abstract concepts come alive and their ambitions in engineering, medicine and other science related fields begin to take shape.

Ultimately, SAHCO’s intervention at Mafoluku Grammar School is a model for how private sector participation can revitalize education in Nigeria as it demonstrates that when corporate organisations invest thoughtfully in learning infrastructure, they do more than donate equipment—they ignite curiosity, build capacity, and inspire the next generation.
As Nigeria continues its journey toward industrial and technological relevance, initiatives like this may well prove to be the spark that lights the path forward.
