Meeting evolving ICAO standard, addressing Nigeria’s airspace complexity our goal, NAMA MD
Managing Director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Engineer Umar Ahmed Farouk affirmed that Nigeria will adapt to evolving International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards, and address the increasing complexity of the country’s national airspace as the agency work to ensure a safe and secure airspace for flight operations.
Addressing directors, general managers, heads of divisions, and air traffic services professionals at a retreat in Ibadan, he reiterated the agency’s commitment to strengthening capacity development, enhancing safety culture, and modernizing Nigeria’s air navigation services.
The NAMA Chief, who was represented by the Director of Human Resources and Administration Abimbola Ladipo, said whilst airspace infrastructure is crucial, and technology is indispensable, it is the human element that remains paramount.
Farouk said “It is empowered, well-trained, and ethically centered professionals who interpret information, make rapid decisions, and uphold the highest safety standards.”
“We must acknowledge a critical reality: safety is not delivered by technology alone—it is delivered by people. Even the most sophisticated systems necessitate a capable, confident, and well-prepared team.”
He added that the transformation of Nigeria’s air navigation services will not be realized without deliberate investment in the workforce, continuous training, personal development, effective leadership, and the activation of an appropriate organizational culture or the driving forces behind sustainable progress.
This year’s theme “Empowering People, Elevating Safety: Advancing Air Traffic Services Through Training and Culture (A Skilled Team for a Safer Sky)” he explained is both timely and relevant adding that as aviation evolves rapidly, influenced by advancing technologies, increasing traffic demands, and global safety requirements, NAMA’s strength is firmly rooted in its people.
“I must also recognize the unwavering dedication, professionalism. and resilience shown daily by our Air Traffic Services (ATS) personnel. You are the guardians of safety in our skies—silent yet vigilant protectors who ensure order, efficiency, and predictability in an increasingly intricate airspace. Your responsibilities are demanding and often executed under demanding conditions, yet you consistently exhibit precision in your work.” he said.

“This retreat presents us with a valuable opportunity to assess our current position, identify gaps, and articulate the future we envision for Air Traffic Services in Nigeria. It is a platform for reflecting on emerging global trends. adapting to evolving ICAO standards, and addressing the increasing complexity of our national airspace.”

Director of Air Traffic Services, Mr. John Tayo commended the management for its investment in equipment and personnel of the agency affirming that the ATCs are now better equipped to manage the country’s airspace.
